Vodafone Staff Get New Emergency Service
Staff at Vodafone’s Newbury headquarters are to benefit from its
link-up with an innovative emergency notification service.
The Newbury based mobile phone giant helped launch the ICE (In
Case of Emergency) initiative last April, after which the scheme
gained worldwide publicity in the wake of the 7th July bombings
in London. The brainchild of paramedic Bob Brotchie, it involved
putting the name of an emergency contact into your mobile phone
after the acronym ICE, so that emergency services and health
workers would immediately know where to look should a patient be
unconscious or unable to communicate.
Now ICE has progressed to a fully secure card-based next of kin
and medical notification service, and Vodafone staff are among the
first to benefit. Karen McArthur, Corporate Responsibility Manager
for Vodafone, said it was "proud to be involved in this initiative.
ICE demonstrates through practical example the important role a
mobile phone can play when minutes matter in an emergency. By adopting
the ICE advice, your mobile will now also help the rescue services
quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be vital in a
life or death situation. We have now negotiated a range of staff
discounts with ICE for their new service, which should be used in
conjunction with the mobile phone concept."
In addition, where a staff member purchases an Ice Solo policy
(for one person) Vodafone will pay for them to upgrade to cover
their entire family. Bob Brotchie said: "Vodafone have supported
us all the way through and we’re delighted to continue our
association with a company prepared to help the little man."
